Labour Court recommends An Post review promotion procedure after worker dispute

The Labour Court recommended that An Post place a worker who had acted as a Post Office Clerk at the end of the appointment list, then review his progress after appointment and training. It also recommended that An Post review its provisional appointment procedure with the Communications Workers’ Union. The union had argued that An Post denied the worker promotion despite his acting in the grade and not receiving the same training as full-time clerks. An Post said a supervisor’s report on his performance was unsatisfactory and cited 21 occasions when he failed to balance counter stock and cash. The Court signed its recommendation on 31 October 1996, after investigating the dispute on 7 October. It found that listing successful candidates while an appointment remained provisional was confusing and not conducive to good industrial relations.
