In 1996, the Labour Court recommended that a worker was not unfairly dismissed by Irish Warehousing And Transport Company Limited. The recommendation, signed on 21 October 1996, said the dismissal followed a loss of business and was unrelated to the worker's performance. The worker had provided back-up services to a courier and was employed on a six-month probationary period. The worker disputed the company's downturn explanation and said the dismissal caused hardship and embarrassment. He was also concerned that a request for help with a family income supplement form may have contributed to the dismissal. The company said demand for the back-up work had fallen and that it had paid an extra week's pay as a goodwill gesture.
