The Labour Court recommended that Voluntary Hospitals and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union begin negotiations at each hospital on a career development programme for non-nursing staff. The recommendation was signed on 27 August 1996. The union sought a programme for about 4,000 workers, pointing to an existing scheme at Beaumont Hospital. Voluntary Hospitals said hospitals differ in size, staffing and services, and need flexibility to tailor a programme locally. The Court regretted that the claim had reached it and recommended immediate negotiations at each hospital.
