The Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union accept a four-shift system at Cara Partners Limited, with a 5% lump sum, three extra days’ holidays and a 34% shift premium. The recommendation was signed on 22 August 1996. Workers would work public holidays except Christmas and New Year. The Court also recommended that the parties review overtime after 12 months, when actual hours worked would be available. The union had sought compensation for lost overtime and other changes as Cara Partners moved from three shifts to four. The company said the change was needed to remain viable in a competitive market and would increase salaries and pension benefits for workers moving to the new system.
