The Labour Court recommended that the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union agree to Botanic Gardens gardeners carrying out student assessments, after a dispute with the Office Of Public Works (OPW). The recommendation was signed on 22 August 1996. The OPW should then pay the agreed £6.81 weekly craft analogue increase. The Court said the union could bring a new claim if the gardeners’ involvement later extended beyond the scope described in the OPW’s submission. The union had sought the increase for gardeners who were not included in the original agreement. The OPW argued that the agreed productivity measures had little relevance to their work and sought agreement to student assessments in return.
