In 1996, the Labour Court recommended that the Central Bank Of Ireland introduce a single-operator system for currency checking on a three-month trial. The recommendation was signed on 19 July 1996. The Bank said the system would improve processing and security and offered to recruit additional staff, including three permanent positions. Manufacturing, Science, Finance raised concerns about interruptions, security and payment of the remaining 2% under the Programme for Competitiveness and Work. The Bank said the system would reduce processing staff by 50% and that closing machines for breaks would cut throughput by 20%. The Court recommended that employees' concerns be addressed during the trial and that the change be considered in wider negotiations.
