In 1996, the Labour Court recommended immediate talks between Mc Carren And Company Limited and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union over proposed changes to pay, conditions and 68 redundancies. The company said its plan was needed to keep the plant viable. The union argued it would reduce workers' earnings and that the proposed redundancy package was inadequate. The company did not attend the Court hearing in Monaghan on 11 July. The Court recommended that the parties explore options to secure the business's survival. Any necessary redundancy severance, it said, should be no less than the company's most recent proposal. The recommendation was signed on 18 July 1996.
