Labour Court recommends review of three Irish Ispat posts after pay freeze

The Labour Court recommended that Irish Ispat Limited reassess the grading of three posts after a three-year pay freeze, in a recommendation signed on 4 July 1996. The Manufacturing, Science, Finance union sought upgrades, saying the workers had taken on increased duties and responsibilities after restructuring. Irish Ispat Limited said those extra duties were part of the restructuring and upgrades would breach the agreed pay freeze. The Court said workers who take on a higher-value post should receive the higher rate, but found that these claimants had taken on additional duties as part of a wider restructuring. The parties disagreed about the extent and value of the work, so the Court recommended reassessing the posts and their grading when the pay freeze ends.
