The Labour Court found no basis for different lump sums in Mallow and Carlow for jobs on the same grade, in a recommendation signed on 10 July 1996. The dispute involved Irish Sugar PLC and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The union sought similar payments for workers at the Mallow plant after workers in Carlow received interim lump sums while a grading review was pending. Irish Sugar PLC said claims at each location were considered separately and that the Carlow payments did not automatically apply elsewhere. The Court relied on correspondence stating that the Carlow payments were interim pending the grading exercise, and found no basis for different lump sums for jobs on the same grade.
