Labour Court recommends £200 compensation for two Famac workers dismissed after van theft

The Labour Court recommended that Famac International Limited pay £200 compensation, notice and holiday pay to two delivery workers dismissed after items disappeared from their van. The recommendation, dated 1 July 1996, said dismissal was too severe, while finding the workers had not taken due care to secure the vehicle's contents. The Court criticised the dismissal process, finding the workers had not been told at the fact-finding meetings that they could be dismissed and should have had a chance to respond to a gross-misconduct charge. It also said they should have been allowed representation at the appeal hearing. The Marine, Port And General Workers' Union had challenged the procedures used.
