The Labour Court recommended that jobs operating new stream feeder machines at Stream International Dublin Limited be shared between members of the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union (SIPTU) branches. The recommendation was signed on 12 March 1996. SIPTU’s Printing Trades Branch and Women Workers Branch each claimed the work for their members. The company said it preferred to train members of both branches, but an internal union dispute had prevented agreement. The Court said workers should have the opportunity to update their skills as technology changed, and recommended sharing the jobs in the interests of equity and protecting employment.
