In 1996, the Labour Court recommended that National Irish Bank increase its proposed lump-sum settlement from £400 to £1,200 over the closure of a canteen used by ten porters at its College Green Branch. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought ongoing weekly payments, arguing the subsidised lunch was an established employment condition and its withdrawal caused financial loss. The Bank had offered £400 to each affected worker; the Court recommended £1,200 in full and final settlement of the claim. The recommendation was signed on 14 February 1996.
