Labour Court recommends service and leave changes for Novum Overseas temporary workers

In 1996, the Labour Court recommended changes to temporary-worker arrangements at Novum Overseas Limited. Lay-offs of two weeks or less were to be disregarded when determining continuous service, while existing arrangements for selecting workers for lay-offs were to continue. Affected employees were to receive one extra day's leave once for the Christmas 1994 issue. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had sought broader changes to continuity, plant-wide lay-off selection and three extra days' leave. Novum Overseas Limited said an expected order did not materialise, leading to a three-day shutdown, and that the alternative was lay-off. The recommendation was dated 31 January 1996.
