The Labour Court recommended granting the May Day public holiday to workers at Centenary Co-Operative Society under the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1973. It also recommended talks on the overall number of church holy days. The recommendation was signed on 15 December 1995. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought the holiday without losing an existing church holy day. Centenary Co-Operative Society said its leave allocation already exceeded the statutory minimum. The Court said the Act allowed a church holy day to be substituted for a public holiday, but that this did not give the Society an overall right to reduce the number of church holy days previously granted.
