Labour Court rejects firefighters’ allowance and promotion claims

The Labour Court did not recommend conceding the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claims on behalf of three full-time firefighters employed by Kilkenny County Council. The recommendation was signed on 12 December 1995. The union sought an allowance for driving duties outside normal hours and access to promotional posts. It cited a £35 weekly allowance under a Dundalk agreement. The Council said driving was part of the firefighters’ normal duties and that full-time firefighters did not compete for posts in the retained service. The Court concluded it would not be justified in recommending concession of the claim.
