The Labour Court recommended a merit scheme designed for the workers involved in the pay dispute between Baxter Healthcare and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The recommendation was signed on 14 December 1995. The dispute followed a claim for higher pay linked to new technology and computerisation. The union said workers had taken on extra skills and responsibilities but opposed a merit-based scheme. Baxter Healthcare said its house agreement precluded special cost-increasing increases and that it had proposed a merit system to implement an earlier recommendation. The Court said any extension of the scheme to other employees would be a matter for the company.
