Labour Court backs overtime threshold but rejects SIPTU compensation claim

The Labour Court recommended that part-time workers at Wellman International Ltd. receive overtime only after working more than 7.8 hours a day or 39 hours a week. It did not find in favour of the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim for compensation for lost pay during an unofficial stoppage. The union said workers lost an average of £250 each and sought full compensation. Wellman International Ltd. argued workers should not be paid for unofficial action. The Court said both sides had broken normal procedures, but a 1976 agreement ruled out wage claims for unofficial stoppages. The recommendation was signed on 23 October 1995.
