In 1995, the Labour Court recommended an annual allowance of £1,150 for staff at Oberstown Boys' Centre who worked with detained adolescents. The recommendation was signed on 8 September 1995 and provided for a pro-rata rate for part-time workers.
Impact had sought £2,000 a year, arguing that staff worked in dangerous and stressful conditions and faced risks comparable to those at Trinity House. Oberstown Boys' Centre, funded by the Department of Education, said its care staff salaries reflected their duties and exceeded pay for comparable residential care staff.
The Court found merit in the claim but did not recommend the full amount sought. It noted the parties had agreed the claim could be considered outside the constraints of the national pay agreements.
