In 1995, the Labour Court recommended that W.M. McKinney & Sons Limited (T/A Oatfields Sweets) recognise the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and accept its right to represent union members at the company. The recommendation was signed on 1 August 1995. The union said workers had sought its help and lacked confidence in the Works Committee’s ability to negotiate on pay and conditions. W.M. McKinney & Sons Limited argued that the elected committee should remain the sole negotiating body.
