In 1995, the Labour Court recommended immediate advancement to senior research officer for former AFT staff at the top of the research officer scale, with retrospection for the years they had been held at that grade. The recommendation was signed on 1 August 1995. Teagasc and Manufacturing Science Finance disputed whether past advancement practice established a right to promotion; Teagasc said promotions required approval and were not automatic. The Court did not recommend conceding the claim for entrants after the Teagasc Act was passed and expressed concern that claimants had taken industrial action before the hearing.
