The Labour Court recommended that part-time retained firefighters be reimbursed at the appropriate travelling and drill rate if compulsory medical examinations required by Offaly County Council cost them time or travel expenses. The dispute was raised by Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The recommendation, signed on 19 July 1995, said payment for compulsory fitness examinations was a national issue that would be better resolved at that level. The Council already provided transport and reimbursed actual lost earnings, but made no payment to firefighters who suffered no loss.
