In 1995, the Labour Court recommended national discussions after Beaumont Hospital and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union disputed temporary contracts and flexibility for porters and ward attendants. The union sought permanent appointments for temporary staff with more than 12 months' service. The Court found it unreasonable for staff to remain on temporary contracts for an inordinate time when permanent vacancies existed, while acknowledging the hospital's concerns about cost and efficiency. It recommended the parties seek a nationally accepted resolution by 30 June 1995. The recommendation was signed on 23 March 1995.
