Labour Court recommends redeployment and compensation for long-serving Roadstone driver

In a 1994 recommendation signed on 23 November, the Labour Court said a long-serving driver at Roadstone Provinces Limited should accept redeployment while retaining his current rate of pay personally. It also recommended compensation equal to 2.50 times his average annual overtime over the previous three years. The dispute concerned the proposed elimination of directly employed drivers at Ballyneety Quarry. The worker, who had 31 years’ service, did not want to become an owner-driver. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said redeployment would cut his earnings by about £100 a week and leave him seasonal rather than full-time; the company said the quarry had been losing money and offered an alternative driving post at the same location. The Court considered the company’s redeployment proposal reasonable and recommended accepting it, alongside the compensation formula. The figure would be calculated from the driver’s average annual overtime over the three years before the hearing.
