In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that Wexford County Council implement its proposed work-practice changes for firefighters, increasing its compensation offer to £90,000, payable pro rata. The recommendation was signed on 1 November 1994. The rehearing concerned rostering, standby arrangements, time rounding and maintenance of breathing apparatus equipment. The Council had offered £30,000 in compensation against projected earnings reductions; the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued the changes would harm firefighters’ conditions and earnings. The Court also recommended payment to the nearest half hour until 31 December 1996, followed by payment to the nearest quarter hour from 1 January 1997.
