In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Cable And Wire Limited and Services Industrial Professional Technical Union implement a revised bonus scheme, subject to a joint review after 31 March 1995. The recommendation was signed on 4 August 1994. The union opposed the changes, saying they could substantially reduce workers' earnings after years under an open-ended incentive scheme. The company argued falling prices and the need for consistent, higher production made the existing scheme unsustainable. The Court said the changes were unavoidable given the company's trading position and recommended a review to consider whether the existing scheme could be restored.
