In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that Beamish And Crawford Limited increase its proposed compensation fund to £140,000 for 11 workers redeployed during a brewery rationalisation. The Court said the parties should agree a formula to divide the sum. The recommendation was signed on 5 August 1994. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the workers had been promised compensation based on two years plus eight weeks. The company said its earlier proposal had assumed no more than seven workers would transfer, while 11 ultimately sought compensation, and said it was prepared to pay up to the value of that proposal. The Court said the larger number could not have been anticipated and treated the calculation as exceptional. It said any existing strike and protective notices should be withdrawn if both parties accepted the recommendation.
