In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that Kerry Group pay £650 to each van-sales worker affected by the introduction of handheld terminals, and that Services Industrial Professional Technical Union accept the revised proposal. The recommendation was signed on 3 August 1994. The terminals replaced handwritten docket books in a trial at the Ballyfree operation in Dublin. The union said they lengthened the working day by about an hour without overtime pay and sought an introductory payment and annual bonus. Kerry Group said the system made staff's work easier and rejected an ongoing payment. The Court revised the conciliation proposal by raising its lump sum from £500 to £650 per worker.
