The Labour Court recommended that Southborough International keep its current arrangements for selecting staff for a new project division, while reviewing safeguards against lay-offs. The recommendation was signed on 24 June 1994. The Court accepted that the need for a stable project team could sometimes outweigh the usual last-in, first-out approach. But it said the agreement protected low-volume staff without equivalent safeguards for high-volume staff, where lay-offs appeared more likely. It recommended that the company and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union examine the agreement and develop protections for long-serving staff across all three divisions.
