In 1994, the Labour Court recommended changes to Medite Of Europe’s sick-pay scheme after a dispute with the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The recommendation was signed on 20 June 1994. The recommended scheme would pay 100% of the difference between basic net pay and Social Welfare entitlement for the first two weeks, then 75% for three weeks, 50% for 12 weeks and 25% for nine weeks. The company was also to reinstate 0.75% under the P.E.S.P. if the recommendation was accepted. Medite said high absence levels and the cost of the scheme made revision necessary. The union said workers should not have to give up benefits negotiated in good faith, but was prepared to discuss changes less extensive than those sought by the company.
