In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that River Island Clothing Company recognise Mandate’s right to negotiate for employees who were union members. The recommendation was signed on 24 May 1994. Mandate had sought recognition and negotiations on behalf of its members. The company said it had no objection to union membership, but preferred to handle workplace issues through its own management structure.
