The Labour Court recommended that Celtic Coasters Limited offer, and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and Technical Electrical and Engineering Union accept, two weeks’ pay per year of service plus statutory redundancy entitlement in full settlement of their claim. The company had decided to end its river transport business and issued redundancy notices to all workers, effective at the end of October 1993. The unions sought terms comparable to those received by three workers made redundant in 1992. Celtic Coasters said it was no longer trading or viable and could not afford more than statutory entitlements. The recommendation was signed on 6 May 1994.
