The Labour Court recommended changes to Bank Of Ireland’s performance-related pay scheme for Bank Assistants, including a salary range of £9,100 to £15,500 and a way to appeal complaints about the scheme. The recommendation was signed on 4 March 1994.
The Irish Bank Officials' Association sought changes to pay and conditions, saying the Bank had presented its proposal as a fait accompli. It wanted a single salary structure with annual increments. The Bank said its proposal had been improved, offered progression and bonuses, and allowed staff to return to the previous system after two years.
The Court said employee distrust of management was evident and urged both sides to improve their working relationship. It said appraisals should be fair and transparent, with a mechanism for handling complaints. Its recommendations included a cash bonus only at the top of the new range, no loss of income for employees who opted out, and an overall review of the scheme after two years. It also urged both parties to accept the proposals as a fair and reasonable way to meet their aims.
