In 1994, the Labour Court recommended that Atlantic Mills Limited and the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union and Technical Engineering and Electrical Union negotiate separately on a PESP increase and the company's restructuring plan. The recommendation was signed on 16 February 1994. The unions said two craftworker departures that were not replaced amounted to a 7% reduction in their numbers and argued that the increase should be considered separately from further restructuring. The company said the plan and two further redundancies were needed for viability. The Court recommended talks on an additional increase of up to 3%, taking account of voluntary reductions, and urgent negotiations on implementing rationalisation.
