In 1993, the Labour Court recommended that Western Care Association employees should have access to a pension scheme. The Court also recommended that the parties make joint representations to the relevant authorities to speed a scheme’s introduction for voluntary-body employees. The claim was brought by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union and the Irish Municipal Public and Civil Trade Union on behalf of 130 workers. The Association said a scheme would cost £235,000 a year and could force service and job cuts; the unions said workers needed occupational pensions and would contribute to a reasonable scheme. The recommendation was dated 4 October 1993.
