The Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union discuss rules for granting a local travel pass to a worker’s common-law wife. The recommendation was signed on 16 June 1993. The Court found no compelling reason to withhold the pass in the circumstances of the case. The union said the worker had lived with his partner for more than 12 years and argued that comparable rail staff could receive passes. Iarnrod Eireann said Irish law and international travel rules did not recognise common-law spouses for the concessions.
