In 1993, the Labour Court recommended that Claremorris Limited pay each worker, in addition to statutory redundancy, an amount equal to the rebate applicable to their redundancy payment. The recommendation was dated 6 May 1993. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought enhanced terms for workers with between five and 21 years’ service after the company decided to close its Claremorris plant. The Court took account of financial difficulties at the parent company and recommended the rebate-equivalent payment instead of the union’s larger claim.
