In 1993, the Labour Court recommended against including the £16.52 Saturday allowance in severance calculations for workers made redundant by Thorn Home Entertainment. The recommendation was dated 22 March 1993. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union, Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union, and Manufacturing Science Finance argued the allowance formed part of basic weekly pay under a previous agreement. Thorn Home Entertainment said the May 1992 settlement covered statutory and other entitlements and excluded extra compensation or allowances. The Court found no grounds to concede the unions' claim.
