In 1993, the Labour Court declined to recommend the unions’ claim for two Kilkenny County Council workers to have Thomastown restored as their base instead of Gowran. The Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians and the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the transfer caused inconvenience and a loss of about £25 a week in travelling allowance; the Council said redeployment was needed because of reduced Housing Department funding and protected the workers’ jobs. The Court recommended favourable consideration of a return to the housing programme and Thomastown base if conditions improved. Deputy Chairman Evelyn Owens signed the recommendation on 4 March 1993.
