In 1993, the Labour Court recommended increasing redundancy terms for 137 workers affected by the planned closure of Robert Usher And Company Limited’s Irish plant. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought improved terms, saying many workers had long service and limited prospects of alternative work. The company cited low-priced imports, recession, falling sales and financial difficulty, and described its offer as generous. The Court recommended two weeks’ pay per year of service, plus statutory entitlement. The recommendation was dated 5 March 1993.
