In 1993, the Labour Court recommended that Iarnrod Eireann accept the National Bus and Rail Union’s proposed roster for locomotive drivers on a new Sunday service between Galway and Dublin. The recommendation was signed on 29 January. Iarnrod Eireann proposed nine-hour Sunday duties. The union argued its roster offered drivers an acceptable social dimension and would cost £16 less. The company said Sunday work was necessary for a seven-day railway and cited financial constraints. The Court said nine-hour Sunday duties at premium rates were not unusual or unreasonable. It said changes to the formal roster arrangements required general discussion, but concluded the service proposed by the union was not unreasonable and recommended that a roster along those lines be accepted.
