The Labour Court recommended that B & I Line defer for two years its proposals to red-circle existing checkers and regrade future staff as Clerical Level 1, then review the position. The recommendation was signed on 14 January 1993. The Court also recommended buy-out compensation of 21 months of actual loss, paid half on acceptance and half six months later, and said Clause 3 of P.E.S.P. should not be part of the programme. Amalgamated Transport and General Workers’ Union and Services Industrial Professional Technical Union had objected to the proposed staffing and pay changes. The Court accepted the need for rationalisation, citing the company’s financial position, sterling and market competitiveness.
