In a recommendation signed on 4 January 1993, the Labour Court proposed changes to Waterford Crystal Limited's cost-improvement measures, which affected about 1,600 employees. The Court recommended extending to 12 months a moratorium on outsourcing existing Waterford products and withdrawing compulsory-redundancy clauses. The company said savings were needed to support investment and maintain production in Waterford; the Amalgamated Transport And General Workers' Union raised concerns about job security, outsourcing and the company's commitment to the site.
The Court also recommended extending a 25% cap on pay reductions through 31 December 1995, revising the sick-pay scheme, and adding £300 to the 1993 annual bonus, bringing it to £800 per person subject to conditions. It considered the proposals severe but broadly equitable across workforce sections, with a bias towards lower-paid workers. The Court recommended a three-year undertaking against industrial action and referral of unresolved implementation disputes to the Court.
