The Labour Court recommended a 7% increase to minimum freelance rates at Irish Press Newspapers P.L.C., effective from 22 December 1992. The National Union Of Journalists had sought an agreement applying company wage increases since 1987 to freelance rates, with full retrospection. The union said rates had been frozen since 1987 and left freelance workers vulnerable. The company said its payment system rewarded merit and originality, and that the proposed formula would be too costly amid declining advertising revenue and circulation.
