In 1992, the Labour Court recommended against a site agreement for the Sandoz Chemicals Plant at Ringaskiddy, backing the Construction Industry Federation in rejecting the Cork Building Group of Unions’ claim. The recommendation was signed on 4 November 1992. The unions sought a 35p-per-hour site allowance, a 35p-per-hour industrial relations incentive and payment in lieu of notice. The Court said the unions’ reliance on Cork local bargaining criteria could not be sustained, noting that many sites had no such agreements. It considered site agreements unnecessary given improved wage structures in the construction industry. The site was under construction, with about 480 workers represented by the Cork Building Group of Unions.
