The Labour Court recommended that Irish Steel Limited keep its job-evaluation scheme in effect after the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought a 35% pay increase for 64 melt-shop workers. The recommendation was dated 4 November 1992. The Court said removing the rates established through job evaluation would disturb other pay relationships within the company. It also recommended that an independent chair lead a review of whether the scheme fully recognised heat and dust in the workers’ jobs. The union said working conditions had deteriorated and warranted compensation; the company said conditions had improved and further labour costs could not be afforded.
