Labour Court recommends against Monaghan Poultry bonus-scheme discussions

The Labour Court recommended against the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s claim for discussions on a production bonus scheme at Monaghan Poultry Products Limited. The recommendation was dated 3 November 1992. The union said workers’ pay lagged behind local competitors and that staff flexibility had supported the company’s growth. The company argued that a bonus could not operate on a self-financing basis and cited market and financial difficulties. The Court was not satisfied that the union had established that such schemes were usual or viable in the industry; the comparator scheme it cited had failed and become a fixed-payment bonus.
