In 1992, the Labour Court recommended that Central Fisheries Board concede a £2,000-a-year information technology allowance claimed for a senior technician by the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union. The recommendation was dated 29 October 1992. The union said the technician had sole responsibility for the Board's computer system, including its hardware, software and maintenance, and trained staff. The Board argued that the allowance was intended to retain essential IT staff and that there was no recognised pay link between the technician grade and executive grades. Having considered the parties' submissions and the Programme for Economic and Social Progress, the Court recommended conceding the allowance.
