In 1992, the Labour Court recommended that Becton Dickinson And Company Limited not pay additional compensation to 43 female employees who became liable for night work under a four-shift roster. The recommendation was dated 23 October 1992. Services Industrial Professional Technical Union argued that the employees’ earlier contracts covered day or two-shift work and that the change would disrupt their social and family lives. The company said a February 1992 agreement made all employees available for four-shift work, with pay increases, bonuses and shift allowances among the benefits.
