Labour Court recommends £100 payment per worker in Smurfit bonus dispute

In 1992, the Labour Court recommended that Smurfit Corrugated Cases Limited pay £100 to each worker involved in a dispute over its waste-bonus scheme and negotiate an amended scheme without delay. It declined the union’s claim for retrospective payments under the old scheme. The recommendation was dated 21 October 1992. Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the company had not introduced a replacement scheme after suspending the old one in 1989. The company said its new machinery produced reliable waste figures only from January 1992 and that it had offered a replacement scheme backdated to then.
