In 1992, the Labour Court recommended that Irish Shell Limited recognise the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union for Grades 5 and 6 and negotiate with it on behalf of members. It also recommended separate negotiating arrangements for those grades. The company disputed that it had promised recognition and cited the grades' management responsibilities. The recommendation was signed on 9 September 1992.
